Perth was enveloped in thick smoke for most of the day today as an unfortunate change in wind direction blew smoke from bush fires in the south of the state over the metropolitan area.

Smoke gets in your eyes….and everywhere else. Bush fire smoke covers Perth.
These bush fires are deliberately lit as part of the Department of Conservation and Land Management’s strategy to prevent large out of control bush fires in summer. The idea is to have small controlled fires which are more manageable and thereby reduce the amount of combustible material in forests. In effect this greatly reduces the risk of devastating bush fires which end up destroying property and peoples lives.
The fires today were apparently located around Collie.(A town famous for bogans and coal mining 200kms south of Perth) Although fires are only lit when wind direction is favourable(away from the city hopefully) the wind does have a uncanny knack of changing direction without notice…which what is happened today.

Burswood casino and high-rise apartments in the smoke.
For thousands of Perth residents, the smoke means sore throats and red eyes. I hate that! Even worse for elderly people and asthma sufferers… they can end up in hospital as a result of such smoke. This amount of smoke is unacceptable in my opinion and not a good role model for people wanting to quit smoking.
hehe

The irony of Western Australian Health Department’s anti-smoking campaign. I’m quitting bushfires?

best to wear a face mask if this continues
Thankfully with winter coming and wet weather, there will be no bush fires…for a while.
